Four questions you may have about glaucoma

Glaucoma is often discussed when you get an eye exam or in any conversations about a serious eye condition. But what is glaucoma exactly and what are the warning signs? And is there anything you can do to prevent it from happening or to treat it once you have the disease?

These are common questions and they need answers, especially since only half of the 3 million Americans ages 40 and older with glaucoma know they have it, according to the National Eye Institute.

Each of the questions above is answered below to help provide a more thorough understanding about glaucoma.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause damage to the eye’s optic nerve, which can result in vision loss and blindness. Several studies have been conducted about the disease. According to The Eye Diseases Prevalence Research Group, it is estimated that more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those people know they have it. Glaucoma is also the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

What are the warning signs?

In most cases, there are no warning signs of glaucoma. This is because the most common form of the disease, open-angle glaucoma, has virtually no symptoms. In addition, no pain is typically associated with the increased eye pressure caused by the disease. The only way to detect glaucoma is through a comprehensive eye exam. At Utah Eye Centers, you can get this exam to find out if you have glaucoma or any other eye diseases.

How does glaucoma happen?

The most common form of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, starts with a buildup of fluid that increases the pressure in one or both eyes. This buildup is caused by the slow clogging of the eye’s drainage canals. The pressure produced by this backup then damages the optic nerve, which is the nerve fibers that transfer visual images to your brain. Glaucoma first starts affecting your side vision and as it progresses, vision loss becomes more noticeable. This can then lead to tunnel vision, where you can only see straight ahead. If not controlled, glaucoma can lead to serious and even permanent vision loss.

How can you prevent and treat glaucoma?

If glaucoma is discovered in its early stages, your doctor can control pressure through medication or surgery and can delay the progression of the disease. This is why it is always important to have a comprehensive eye exam at least every one to two years to check for glaucoma or any other eye issues.

Which type of eye drop is best for you?

Have you ever had a swollen eye, dry eyes, pink eye, or even red eyes or itchiness? Eye drops tend to be a common remedy for these ailments. But how do you know if you are choosing the right one?

The best approach to solve this issue is to first call Utah Eye Centers at 801-476-0494 and schedule an appointment with your eye doctor. Your doctor will help you know which eye drop is right for you and your situation.

Over-the-counter eye drops vs. prescription eye drops

Over-the-counter eye drops are appropriate in many cases. They also can be cheaper and more convenient. These eye drops, however, won’t be the right remedy when symptoms worsen or persist. That’s why you should always consult your eye doctor to rule out a potentially sight-threatening infection or disease.

In addition, many over-the-counter eye drops tend to dry out your eye and can create more problems. That is where prescription eye drops are more beneficial. You will need to see your eye doctor to get a prescription eye drop.

Eye drops for dry eyes

Dry eyes are a common symptom for many people. Lubricating eye drops, also known as artificial tears, can be purchased over the counter and can provide temporary relief for dry eyes. If your symptoms are more severe, you may need a prescription eye drop, gel or ointment.

Eye drops for red eyes

Decongestant eye drops, also known as whitening eye drops, get rid of red eyes by shrinking the tiny blood vessels on the white part of the eye (sclera), which in turn, makes them less visible. While these eye drops can eliminate redness, they can be masking a more serious problem. These eye drops can also dry out your eye, which can lead to even more redness for some people.

Eye drops for allergies

Antihistamine eye drops help to remedy itchy eyes due to allergies. If itching, however, persists even after using these eye drops, visit your eye doctor to get prescription eye drops or any needed oral medications.

Again, before using any of these eye drops, consult an eye doctor. You can schedule an appointment with us at Utah Eye Centers to fully evaluate your eye condition. This way, you can rest assured that if there is a serious problem or not, you will be taken care of.

How to find your brand Dentist?

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable.

1. What is it about your service or product that makes it unique?

If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text.

2. What value do you provide to your customers or clients?

Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.

3. Who is your ideal Doctor?

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.
